THE GUILD
The Wheel of Time grinds through the Ages constantly weaving and reweaving the Age Lace. One thing that remains constant throughout the Ages is the shady world of the Underground--though some Ages boast of less than others. In one Age, called the Third Age, a revolutionary turn of events caused an organization simply known as the Guild to form. What started as just a few acquaintances and wary allies within one of the major cities of the world took on new meaning as they gradually brought most of the city under their control ruling by fear and appealing to the greedier side of human kind. After the rediscovery of Traveling the Guild grew and flourished spreading over the course of 300 yearsOver the time elapsed since the rediscovery of Traveling late in the Third Age the Guild slowly spread its influence. Sending out agents fanatically loyal to the Guild to each city to "prepare" it for its coming, the Guild slowly became a major underworld presence in every major city in the world. Each Guild is an autonomous part of the whole, and very little is known beyond that besides the fact that while the Guild deals with other darker aspects of the Underworld their main goal is information. Each city has its own "Guild" and is ruled by one with the title of Guildmaster. As it stands it is reported only two women hold such an esteemed position within the Guild--and it is rumored that one of the women is the head of the Guild [otherwise known as the Grandmaster], but little is known of her. It is said that the Grandmaster of the Guild is surrounded by a legion of fanatically loyal followers that seem to have a knack for sniffing out plots against the Grandmaster and nipping them in the bud. These followers are called within the Guild the "Masterkey"--and are among the most feared members of the Guild.
It is said, from a source deep within the Guild that what holds the Guild together over the far flung reaches is the knowledge that each one can require information on other countries and the others have no choice but to give it. The less blood shed over the need to get information means more to oversee the operations of each City Guild. It is also said that each Guildmaster is a channeler his/herself or has one close to them that is strong enough to lay the weave for Traveling. Every month on a predetermined day [not always the same day] these Guildmasters meet at a secret location known only to them and their channelers...the revelation of this location is cause for an immediate death mark and a simultaneous transition to a secondary location.
The Guild has always been wrapped in mystery and members of the Guild learn quickly to follow Guild statutes or pay the price. Revelation of any Guild Secrets without the prior consent of the Guildmaster and the Grandmaster is grounds for immediate termination. The exact nature of some of the secrets within the Guild is not known to those outside of the Guild.
