One of the easiest ways to make your own incense is to soak fireworks "punks" (those bamboo sticks you use to light the fuses) in fragrance oil (essential oil is nice, but very expensive). Let dry before lighting.

CONE INCENSE
3 parts powdered gum mastic
1 to 2 parts fragrance oil
Dissolve the gum in the oil. Add enough powdered cinnamon, sandalwood, charcoal or sawdust to make a paste. Form into cones, let dry thoroughly.

HERBAL INCENSE
1 tb. dried, powdered herbs (lavender, rose, sandalwood, etc.)
1 tb. fine sawdust
1 tsp. gum arabic, dissolved in 2/3 oz. water
Mix to form a paste, form into cones, let dry.
(add several drops fragrance oil for added scent)

COMBUSTIBLE INCENSE
2 tb. gum tragacanth
1 tb. gum benzoin
1 tb. charcoal powder (substitute sandalwood or sawdust powder)
1 tsp. potassium nitrate
1 tsp. fragrance oil
4 tb. water
Dissolve the tragacanth and potassium nitrate in the water. Add remaining ingredients to form a paste. Roll into cones and let dry.

PATCHOULI INCENSE
2 parts sandalwood
1/2 part talc
1/8 part gum tragacanth
10-15 drops patchouli oil (or other oil)
2 parts water
Mix gum and water. Add other ingredients and knead until a paste is formed. Shape into cones and let dry.

INCENSE CONES
5 tb. gum arabic
6 oz. powdered charcoal
1 oz. gum benzoin
1 tsp. sandalwood powder
Mix the gum with enough water to make a paste. Add other ingredients.
Mix in a few drops essential (or fragrance oil) to scent. Roll into cones and let dry 2 or 3 days.

INCENSE
1/2 cup water
1 tb. plus 1 tsp. gum arabic
Mix well. Gradually add 1/2 cup fine sawdust until a "dough" forms. If desired, 1/8 cup total of any of the following can be added:
gum benzoin
powdered frankincense resin
powdered myrrh resin
powdered spices
Scent paste (see below) and mold into cones. Let dry.

SCENT BLENDS (add to above recipe)
1 oz. gum benzoin
6 drops frankincense oil
6 drops myrrh oil
6 drops sandalwood oil
2 drops jasmine oil
or
1 tb. gum benzoin
6 drops musk or ambrette oil
3 drops rose oil
3 drops neroli oil
3 drops jasmine oil
or
"Kyphi"
4 drops spikenard oil
2 drops peppermint oil
6 drops myrrh oil
4 drops juniper oil
8 drops clary sage oil
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cardamom

UNCROSSING/EXORCISMS -- Some practitioners recommend burning this incense near an open window for 9 consecutive nights during the waning moon.

* 1 oz rose petals
* 1/4 oz sweet bugle (calamus root)
* 1/2 oz cinnamon
* 1/4 oz anise seed
* 1/4 oz frankincense
* 1 oz powdered sandalwood
* 1/4 tsp saltpeter

1. Be sure all herbs,spices,peels,and flowers are completely dry.
2. All dry ingredients must be ground into a fine powder.
3. Mix all ingredients in a small glass container with a clean stick or your fingers.
4. Let the incense stand over night to dry.
5. Store any unused incense in a tightly capped glass jar,away from light.
6. These incenses need self-igniting charcoal. Check the classified ads. Or,in a pinch,you might try to smolder some in a small, heavy pan on top of your stove.
7. Most important,for best results,try to blend your energies with teh incense as you prepare and use it.

A note on the above recipe: there are actually two methods of making this oil. One would be to steep the dry ingredients in olive, almond or jojoba oil for several weeks until the oil is scented, strain and bottle. The other is to use the pure essential oils of the botanicals and add a few drops of each to the carrier oil until the scent seems right (generally 8 to 10 drops total per 1/8 oz. oil).
